True confessions

I have a question for all my followers with the band. Are any of you drinking carbonated beverages yet? It's been 2 years and 2 months since I had my surgery and a couple of weeks ago I got to craving a Diet Dr Pepper. I mean, I didn't drink diet soda much before but occasionally it just hit the spot, you know what I mean? When I had my consultation before surgery I thought the surgeon told me never again have carbonated beverages or caffeine. I drink decaf tea or coffee most of the time. Once in a while I'll have a half cup of the real thing but I haven't tried the carbonated stuff. Well, I broke down and bought a 12 pack of it last week. I tell you it tasted so good, but the burping and gurgling is really embarrassing. My hubby and I were sitting on our deck yesterday after planting a couple of little bushes in our planter and I sipped my Dr Pepper as we relaxed. A short time later I took another little sip and gurgle, burp, gurgle. The burps I could conceal but the gurgles you can't hide. He turned and looked at me like " What the Hell?? " It tasted awesome but I was just wondering if any of you have tried drinking them since surgery. I have a problem drinking water most of the time, it gives me heartburn. Also any Crystal Light products with citrus fruit in it gives me heartburn. It seems they all have some kind of citrus in them. I have been drinking skim milk on occasion and it goes down and doesn't cause heartburn and tastes good too. I also broke a cardinal rule recently and had a glass of milk with my meal. Oh, the good old days. I have gone astray, I know. What has gotten into me? Not only am I drinking the forbidden fruits but I am drinking while eating on occasion. I think I need a serious talking to. Tell me I am not the only one.................

You're not the only one. Don't be so hard on yourself...and remember every Doc has different rules (mine allows both caffeine and carbonation and I have both regularly...I pour the carbonated drink and let it foam up just to get rid of some of the bubbles).

I drink with dinner sometimes and as long as it doesn't make you hungry too soon, then an occassional slip isn't a big deal.

Remember, this is a lifestyle change and no one's life is perfect.

Hi Kathy,

You're not alone! Of course I'm right there with you. No soda though. I need a severe butt kicking to get back on the band wagon!!

Hi Kathy!

I am only about 6.5 months out of Surgery, but I have been drinking a Diet Coke just about every day!

It hasn't caused me any problems, but I too notice the gurgling and burping.

When I am not drinking the Diet Coke, I drink Sugar Free Cherry flavored Kool Aid. It is a great substitute for water.

I don't like to drink straight water unless I have too, and I don't care for putting lemon in it either.

I NEVER drink coffee, tea or milk (unless it is chocolate flavored of course)! LOL

I am e-mailing you directly about possibly getting together in late September!

I was never really a soda drinker.. but every now and then I will take a sip of my DH coke.. it is enough to hit the spot..I didn't feel any ill effects from it.. but I do have plenty of caffeine from other products (coffee, choc).. I think you just need to test the waters and don;t overdo it..

I was never much of a soda drinker before surgery either but I agree it hits the spot once in a while.

Since surgery last August I've had some soda 3 times. I do find that if it's too fizzy I get a lot of burps and gurgles. To solve this I let it sit out open for a little bit first. Such a tasty treat -- but just that a rare treat.

I wouldn't worry myself about it : )

Hi Kathy....
I have not had a carbonated beverage in almost 3 years. I have not used a straw in the same amount of time. Those 2 things were so so so so so tough for me to give up that I just stay clear. Funny thing--the other day when the kids were both home and we were out shopping, we stopped at Starbucks and I got an iced tea. It would have much more convenient to use a straw instead of carrying it around without a lid as we shopped. So, I got a straw and stuck it in the lid! Both kids went ballistic on me! I tried to reason with them and I told them that other bandsters regularly use straw. But, they would have none it! So, no straw for me! LOL!
Even though I was a Diet Coke devotee....I have survived without it. But, come summer--I'd love a good gin and tonic. Maybe hearing about your gurgling incident will keep me on the straight and narrow with that. Noisy stomachs and burping don't go to well with gin and tonics....
Nice to see you back blogging more!
Missed ya!
